Splashpads and Spray Parks!

It’s summertime in Atlanta (in case you forgot), and it’s hot outside. A lot of the playgrounds get super hot, waaaayyy too hot to go and play. So, what are you supposed to do with your kids?

TV??  Nooooo

Computer?? Noooo

Splashpads!

A splash pad is an area for water play that has no standing water. This is said to eliminate the need for lifeguards or other supervision, as there is practically no risk of drowning.

Typically there are ground nozzles that spray water upwards out of the splash pad’s raindeck. There may also be other water features such as a rainbow (semicircular pipe shower), a mushroom shower, or a tree shower. As well, some splash pads feature movable nozzles similar to those found on fire trucks to allow users to spray others. Splashpads are an incredibly safe and fun way to cool off in the summer time! All these splashpads use treated, chlorinated water and run only at certain times of the day.

These things seem to be the new and trendy thing to put in playgrounds. Three splashpads (that I am aware of) have opened in the past year in Atlanta: DH Stanton Park, Historic Fourth Ward Park, and Piedmont Park Legacy Fountain. And of course, there is the old standby, the very popular tourist attraction of Centennial Park Fountain of Rings.

Introducing PlayAtlanta!

Hi and welcome to www.playatlanta.com! My name is Anne and I started this website in hopes to figure out the best playgrounds in Atlanta. See, I am a stay-at-home mom (formerly a nurse at Emory Hospital) to two wonderful and crazy kids under 3. My son is just one of those kids that has to, has to, has to go outside every single day. We live in Grant Park and have the privilege of at least 5 different playgrounds within walking distance, but alas, as the mom, I was getting bored and needed a change in our routine.

So, I decided that we would playground hop. We ventured out to different playgrounds near us and I tried to look up different things on the internet about other playgrounds. I thought that somebody was bound to have a comprehensive list of playgrounds. Which ones are good? Which ones are bad? Which ones are safe? But, no. There is no such thing.

Until now!

I have taken it upon myself to visit and write a review of every single playground over the course of the next year. I hope to have them all visited by June 2012. Did you know that there are over 120 different playgrounds in Atlanta? And that is just a low estimate for the number of playgrounds inside I-285! Seems like a hefty project, but somebody has got to do it.

I’ll fill you in on my adventures on my blog, post new reviews when they come up, and give you the greatest and latest news in the world of Atlanta playgrounds and play activities in my news feed.

Invite your friends and come back and visit. It’s bound to be a wonderful ride!
