Parking: free parking in the Zoo Atlanta Parking lot on Cherokee Ave or Boulevard
Cost: cost of admission to zoo, or free with membership to zoo
Age Range: 18 mo – 7 yr
Ground Cover: packed rubber
Features: all tunnel play area, giving your child the effect of actually being a naked mole rat
Surrounding Park Area: Inside Zoo Atlanta. The naked mold rat playground is directly adjacent to the naked mole rat exhibit, so much so that there are child tunnels leading in and out of the exhibit.
Shade: the tunnels lend to shade for your children
Seating: one bench
Stroller/Wheelchair Access: yes
Safety: There are very few holes where your child could fall or be pushed out. That being said, the whole structure is tunnels, so if your child gets spooked or “stuck,” it may be difficult for an adult to get the child out without help from another child.
Cons: Not a traditional play structure; completely a climbing structure. Can be busy at peak times of the zoo (which is basically any day that the weather is nice!)
Overall Assessment: Lovely area for little ones to play. Compared to the other playground in Zoo Atlanta, this one is perfect for toddlers, as most of the preschool age and older congregate to the much larger (and more advanced) play area at the zoo. There is a bathroom right next to the area.
