Parking: park along the street or in the deck
Cost: the playground is free, it costs money to park in the deck
Age Range: all ages
Ground Cover: packed rubber mulch
Features: A single large play structure with LOTS to do. There are several rock walls and steps leading to a couple of slides (one twisty, one double, and one stacked triple racing slide). Ramps that lead to interactive wall units. Balancing lillipads lead up to the structure as well. There is a rope climbing wall and a standing bounce pad. There are two standing spin abouts and a free standing (and very popular) fire truck. There are some swings (big kid swings, a baby swing, and a special needs swing).
Surrounding Park Area: well, it’s Piedmont Park, basically the most popular park in Atlanta. Tons of walking trails, open areas of green space, dog parks, another playground (see review), a pool, a splashpad (see review), and tons and tons of people watching. On those beautiful spring days in Atlanta, this is the place to be.
Shade: Some shade over the benches, but the playground is basically in the sun.
Seating: several benches near the playground, although they are not all that conducive to seeing your child in every area of the playground.
Stroller/Wheelchair Access: Yes
Safety: I have to say that this is probably one of the more popular playgrounds in Atlanta. What comes along with that is that every mother, father, nanny, friend, aunt, and uncle, take their kids here. It can be very very busy and your kids can get smacked around if you’re not watching (or your kids may be doing the smacking). The fire truck is one place that lots of kids hit other kids just because they want to drive (if you know what I mean). The only safety issue I see with the playground is the the triple slide. It is just an odd looking slide and it seems like some kids want to crawl up it (because it looks like you should…it’s weird).
Cons: Too busy most of the time.
Overall Assessment: This particular playground is called the Mayor’s Grove playground and was completed in 2007. It is clean and very well maintained. One HUGE bonus is that there are free bathrooms directly adjacent to the playground, including a most coveted family bathroom (it even has a toddler potty!!). I always love going to Piedmont Park…it makes me feel like I actually do live in a big city full of people that may actually care about the city they live in for once. People seem to be happy hanging out at the park, laughing with their friends, holding hands with their loved one, and I love that. I want my toddler to see that…a definite must see playground!
Oh, I forgot to mention the duck pond. Bring some bread and you can feed the (overfed) ducks!
