Parking: small parking lot and on street parking
Cost: free
Age Range: skateboarders (beginning – advanced)
Ground Cover: concrete in the skate park, packed mulch in the playground area, and grass in the greenspace
Features: A skatepark!! There are three areas in the skatepark for varying levels of ability. Unfortunately, I don’t know much about skateboarding so I can’t tell you what the tricks are, but it looks like it’s a lot of fun!
There is a small playground area with just a hexagon climbing wall, one multidisc swing, and a seated spin about. Not much to offer.
Surrounding Park Area: Green space. Currently this park is not connected to the other part of Historic Fourth Ward Park (click here for review) with its large playground, splashpad, and amphitheater, but that is part of the future plan.
Shade: There are some covered areas and the solar panels offer a large area of shade.
Seating: Lots of benches
Stroller/Wheelchair Access: Yes
Safety: I’m not sure how to review the safety of the skatepark. Wear your helmet.
Cons: This is a skatepark and if you’re not planning on using your skateboard or BMX bike, you can come and watch. Otherwise, there isn’t a whole lot to do. But watching is crazy awesome!
Overall Assessment: Very cool. Just watching these guys (and girls) makes me feel old and brings me back to watching my little brother skateboard down my street when he was like 8 or something. This is something to check out. Bring a sandwich and just watch some of these guys. It’s a real treat. They even brought in Tony Hawk (a professional skateboarder) for the grand opening.
The park is fantastic. Enjoyable. What makes it sickening is some (NOT everyone) skateboarders are inclined to take over the entire park as if their own. There are small children who are learning to skate. Some of these inconsiderate skateboarders use foul language and indirectly harass the children. Their attitude, language and abrasiveness make the experience undesirable.
