Parking: on street parking
Cost: free
Age Range: 3-10 (not a playground for babies or toddlers)
Ground Cover: rubber mulch
Features: a large climbing structure that is most definitely a climbing structure. There is a rope spider web, a funky half-rainbow climber, suspended poles with pods, an astrorail, and a standing spinner. Separately from the structure is a seated spin about, a see-saw, to separate spinners, and a swing set with 5 big kid swings and a special needs swing.
Surrounding Park Area: Tennis courts, basketball court, recreation center, baseball diamond
Shade: No shade
Seating: No benches on the playground area, although there is an art structure where you can sit and see most of the playground.
Stroller/Wheelchair Access: Yes
Safety: Based on the fact that this is a climbing structure, if your kid is not sure-footed, I wouldn’t go here. Some of this stuff is difficult and scary!
Cons: A couple of things: one, the playground itself is sunken some and there seems to be a problem with draining the water adequately; two, the swings are ALL hung incorrectly and they ALL squeak; three, there is quite a bit of litter, including broken glass.
Overall Assessment: Ok, well I’m not going to be particularly nice about this playground. The climbing structure is cool, I’ll give you that, but otherwise I am not impressed. There seems to be a lot of issues with drainage and I am not particularly fond of the neighborhood. And I know bad things happen all over Atlanta, but just based on the fact that there was a shooting there just at the end of May 2011 (http://www.examiner.com/crime-in-atlanta/six-shot-illegal-gathering-at-rawson-washington-park), I just think you should use your judgement. The shooting happened at 8 pm, so in daylight hours, with kids around! I didn’t have ANY problems when we visited, nobody bothered us, we just played and were completely fine, but I am not going to go back.
